Today, I attended a meeting with librarians, students, and faculty to discuss the current affairs of libraries, locally and globally. We spoke largely on library ethics but the longest topic focused on Second Life. I have been hesitant on the whole SL thing, thinking it largely as another video game that would consume a ton of time. However, businesses, libraries, schools, etc. are taking advantage of this format for other things- such as networking, advertising, education, etc. The Information School at SU aims to present itself there and reach out to students, alums, faculty, potential students, etc. I’ll check it out and try to treat it more as a social networking tool and less of a video game time killer.
Also, Onondaga County Public Library (OCPL) is digitizing their historical records and so is The Upstate Medical Library. I am excited to learn more about these collections and their future formats. More to come on that.
