The big local news at the moment is that Las Vegas has been the recipient of snowy conditions. So much so that they closed the airport yesterday. It was only a few inches, however the infrastructure of Las Vegas doesn’t support snow or ice removal on planes or runways. My flight was canceled and now I find myself hanging out at the UNLV law library. *I’m not bumming it and sleeping here, just visiting while my girlfriend is at work.
I did an internship here, before moving to Sacramento, and mingled with the library people with whom I once worked. They have been cutting back and canceling a ton of print and electronic publications. The budget cuts haven’t effected staff (good news) but hiring is definitely at a freeze across campus. My law firm in Sacramento is slashing costs too and in the library we have weeded, discarded, and evaluated material like never before. The process is a double edge sword of sorts. Not having the funds to access to all the information and books we would like is difficult; however it is comparable to a rebirth. We are getting rid of the old, unused, out dated, and redundant.
I’ve been on vacation for almost a week, if the airport doesn’t close, I’ll be back in the law library going over the collection and working on that whole rebirth thing.
I still can’t believe how much it snowed there it’s crazy; and the fact that the schools are having a snow day is even more ridiculous.
